LGs now responsive to people’s needs – Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Wednesday, said Local Governments in the state were now responsive, responsible to the yearnings and aspirations of the people at the grassroots.

Governor Oborevwori stated this while inaugurating projects executed by the Chairmen of Warri South and Sapele Local Governments.

Speaking in Warri, Governor Oborevwori commended the Council Chairman, Dr. Michael Tidi, for converting the Warri playground, which, he said had been a den of criminals, to Warri South Local Government Cottage Hospital.

Governor Oborevwori, who was joined by former Governor of the State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, the Olu of Warri HRM Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Orosuen of Okere-Urhobo Kingdom, HRM Ogheneochuko Morris Egbobonye-Eyekpimi, Owhotemu II, and the Regent of Agbarha-Warri Kingdom, said the Cottage Hospital would advance the delivery of healthcare service, which is a component part of his MORE Agenda for the people of the state, adding that women, children and the vulnerable would have enhanced access to quality and affordable healthcare services.

He lauded Dr Tidi for the development of the Cottage Hospital, saying; “I have come here today to inaugurate this beautiful cottage hospital. I am elated because this hospital will advance the provision of quality healthcare services for the grassroots which is a cardinal programme of this administration.

“As a grassroot politician, I am a firm believer in the bottom-top approach to development and our people must come first in everything that we do.”

At Sapele, Governor Oborevwori inaugurated Sapele Local Government Legislative Complex; the reconstructed Chairman’s office, Sapele Group of Schools, Adarighofua Road, Amukpe Market, and the Eugene Inoaghan Crescent Amukpe, Sapele.

He said; “Looking at the quality of the projects slated for inauguration today, I am proud to say that this is money well utilised.

“Chairmen have come and gone but your stay in this Council was a good choice and I commend you, your Vice-chairman, management and the legislative arm for a job well done.

“It is obvious that the narrative is changing in our various local governments. In the past, LGs were often criticised for non-performance.

“But today, the story has changed and we now see that our Councils have become more responsive and responsible to the yearnings and aspirations of our people.

“This is how it should be because we were elected to serve the people; when the people give us their votes, it is an expression of their faith and confidence in us. We are in government to meet their needs, not to gratify our selfish desires.

“I am happy that you did not disappoint your people who elected you. I urge all elected and appointees of government that are given the opportunity to serve not abuse it.

“You must not seek political office just for yourself or solely for your personal gain. Life is not measured by how much you acquired but by the kind of legacy that you leave behind.”

Former Governor of the State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan congratulated Dr Tidi on the success of his administration, adding that a lot still needed to be done in Warri and lauded Governor Oborevwori for his renewed vigour to revamp infrastructure in the oil city.

He expressed appreciation to God for the peace and security of the area, noting that the people could only witness development when there is peace among the people.

The Chairman Warri South Local Government, Dr Michael Tidi, said his administration recorded success in primary health care as part of his determination to prioritize the health and well-being of the people.

He said that in the area of the environment, the Council had ensured constant de-weeding, cleaning of drainages and regular evacuation of wastes to the dumpsite.

The Chairman of Sapele Local Government, Chief Eugene Inoaghan, said the projects embarked upon by his administration were cardinal to enhance the social-economic life of the people, and commended Governor Oborevwori for the recent approval for the construction of two roads in Sapele.
